It's tempting to believe that dermatologists hold

It's tempting to believe that dermatologists hold the ultimate answers to our skin and hair problems. But blindly following their advice on skincare and haircare routine might not always be the best idea: Here's why.

1. Many dermatologists turned content creators have affiliations with skincare brands/pharmaceutical companies or may even sell their own products. While most share genuine advice, some might be influenced by their own business interests. (They are humans like us after all!)

2. Some dermatologists need to be better-versed with certain cosmetic ingredients, skincare trends or alternative approaches, limiting the scope of their advice.
One derm recommended adding rosemary oil to the conditioner for hair growth. ( For context, conditioners are not meant to be used on your scalp so it will be a futile attempt.)

Another suggested tea tree oil can clog pores and should be avoided by oily skin(There is a lot of research to support the use of tea tree for acne treatment. Also, tea tree oil is an essential oil and not a carrier oil!)

A reddit user was advised by a derm to avoid toners since they can age your skin faster. (New age toner formulations are not harsh on your skin and actually support your skin health by hydrating and soothing it.)

I don't wish to undermine their authority in the field and have deep respect for dermatologists when it comes to diagnosing and treating skin-related problems. Several dermatologists on Instagram share valuable insights into how our skin and hair work.

But any misinformation shared by them can spread rapidly too.

So I hope they do proper diligence before posting things online considering the significant influence they hold and the potential for their recommendations to be followed blindly.

And as an audience, we should approach any advice shred online critically and consider it alongside our own research, preferences, and experiences.
