How To Take Care Of Your Skin In Monsoon

Last Updated on July 2, 2024

My relationship with the monsoon is a bittersweet affair. On one hand, I delight in the simple joys the season brings- crispy pakoras, vibrant greenery, and the cool winds that bring much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat.

But the monsoon also brings a fair share of problems with it. From unexpected downpours that spoil our plans to the inevitable humidity that makes my oily skin behave worse.

The dampness in the air can lead to a surge in bacterial and fungal skin infections, and it can either dehydrate your skin or make it oilier. This, in turn, can result in clogged pores, blackheads, and acne. That’s why having a good routine is important to prevent such common monsoon skincare problems.

6 Tips For The Perfect Monsoon Skin Care Routine

1. Cleanse Thoroughly

One of the best monsoon skin care tips I can share with you is to have a good cleansing routine that keeps bacteria, dirt, and excess oil away from the pores.

In the morning, use a gentle face wash that leaves your skin hydrated while removing excess oil from pores. And in the evening, use a cleansing oil or balm to deep cleanse the pores before following up with a gentle face wash.

2. Get Exfoliating

High humidity levels during monsoon can make your skin look dull and lifeless. To bring back the lost glow, use an exfoliating face wash or an AHA /BHA serum in the evening twice a week.

Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells from the top revealing brighter and fresher skin underneath. It also helps prevent your pores from being clogged with sweat and dirt, thereby preventing blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.

You can also make a gentle face scrub at home with some gram flour or oatmeal if you have sensitive skin. Mix it with yoghurt and massage it in circular motions before rinsing with water.

3. Use Hydrating Toners

Toners have a watery texture which gets absorbed quickly into the skin without making it feel sticky. So they make a great addition to your monsoon skincare routine.

Look for hydrating or soothing toners made with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, centella asiatica or niacinamide to tackle dullness and dehydration. Even natural hydrosols like rose water or tea tree water are good choices as they soothe irritated skin and help tighten the pores.

4. Moisturize Lightly.

High humidity levels during monsoon can dehydrate your skin leading to dullness and excessive oiliness too. So make sure you moisturize your skin well twice a day to keep it soft and hydrated.

Use a lightweight, oil-free gel moisturizer to hydrate your skin without making it greasy. You also pick moisturizers infused with brightening ingredients like Vitamin C to avoid dullness and tackle dark spots.

5. Face Masks to Rescue.

healthy skin habits for glowing skin

Made a last-minute plan and need an instant glow on your face? Keep a jar of face mask handy to rejuvenate dull skin and reveal, a natural glow. The right mask can firm your skin, purify pores, enhance blood circulation, and even address pigmentation and tanning concerns when used regularly.

If you are in the mood for DIY, you can also whip up some homemade face masks from ingredients readily available in your kitchen.

6. Use SPF Religiously

Just because the sun is hiding beyond the clouds, does not mean its UV rays cannot reach you. The umbrella blocks out only a small amount of radiation.

So use a broad spectrum with at least SPF 30 when you step out irrespective of the cloud cover to avoid sun damage and tanning. A lightweight sunscreen is perfect for people with oily skin while people with dry skin can go for hydrating sunscreens.

How To Take Care Of Oily Skin In Monsoon

Navigating oily skin during the monsoon requires a smart skincare regimen to combat shine and prevent breakouts. It’s crucial to exfoliate regularly with BHA exfoliants about 2-3 times per week, to remove dead skin cells and keep pores clear.

Once or twice a week, treat your skin with a clay mask to deep-cleanse the pores and control oil production. Avoiding oily and sugary foods will also help regulate oil production from within.

If you wear makeup, opt for water-based makeup products that are lightweight and non-comedogenic to avoid clogging your pores. And keep blotting papers handy to absorb any excess oil that accumulates on your skin’s surface during the day.

  • Keep a bottle of rose water handy for quick skin refreshes throughout the day—it’s soothing and helps maintain your skin’s pH balance.
  • If you’re wearing makeup and it’s rainy outside, opt for waterproof formulas to prevent your makeup from running or smudging in the rain.
  • Store your skincare stash in a cool, dry spot to prevent any chance of fungal growth—it’s important to keep those products fresh and effective.
  • If you do get caught in the rain, take a quick shower as soon as you can to wash away any pollutants and prevent potential skin infections.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and nourishing your skin from within with a healthy diet full of fruits, veggies, and proteins.
  • Don’t forget about your hands and feet—they bear the brunt of muddy rainwater. Keep them clean and treat yourself to regular manicures and pedicures to maintain good hygiene.
  • Avoid taking hot showers as they can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness.
