Review: Does Juicy Chemistry Pre-Biotic Barrier Serum Work?

Ever since chemical exfoliating went mainstream, compromised barrier function has become a common skin concern. So Juicy Chemistry recently launched a Pre-Biotic Barrier Repair Serum and I was lucky to get it for a review.

The timing couldn’t have been better. While I have been quite careful with my exfoliation routine to avoid barrier damage, I did notice my skin is not as resilient as it used to be once.

A new exfoliant I purchased recently stung certain areas of my skin on every use. So I tested out these barrier repair ampoules from Juicy Chemistry to see if they made a difference.

Keep reading to find out.

This intensive solutions kit gets you 7 days closer to a healthier and strengthened skin surface. Pichia Mushroom’s prebiotic ferment supports a healthy microbiome and promotes skin regeneration.

The bright-red resin called Dragon’s Blood forms a protective barrier to shield skin against environmental stressors. Along with Gotu Kola, it helps repair the skin’s barrier and supports collagen renewal. Lapsana improves radical resistance, and Brahmi soothes irritated skin. Being a humectant, Hyaluronic acid prevents moisture loss and improves skin’s elasticity.

About the Product:

The pack contains 7 glass vials with 2ml serum in each. There is a plastic dropper(with a cap) and an opener to break open the bottles and store them.

Ingredients:

Osmotic Water (Aqua), Propanediol, Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Pichia Ferment Lysate Filtrate, Dracaena Draco Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Bacopa Monnieri Extract, Lapsana Communis Flower Extract, Moringa Oleifera Seed Extract, Phytic Acid, Benzyl Alcohol, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate.

Directions to Use:

Pour the serum onto clean palms and apply the product on the face and neck. Gently massage in circular motions till it’s fully absorbed.

My Experience Using Juicy Chemistry Pre-Biotic Barrier Repair Serum:

The barrier repair kit can be used for a 7-day intensive treatment(½ ampoule, twice a day) or a 14-day maintenance treatment(½ ampoule once every day).

I chose the latter and used ½ ampoules every day in my nighttime skincare routine. After cleansing and toning my skin, I broke open the ampoule, emptied half of it into my palms, and then gently patted it into the skin.

Then I followed up with moisturizer while securing the remaining serum with the dropper provided for next use. The dropper cap had a crack after a few uses but you can dispense the ampoule directly into your palms as well (much faster this way.)

The first couple of days, I noticed my skin felt plump after my routine which meant the serum is indeed hydrating. But as the weather got drier, I could no longer feel the same plumpness.

This means it is mildly hydrating. While oily-skinned people will find it adequate in the hydration department, people with dry skin may need to layer another hydrating serum or toner perhaps to get that plump feel.

The serum gets quickly absorbed into the skin and leaves a slightly tacky finish. This isn’t much of a concern as a lot of serums tend to do that but I recommend not waiting too long to apply your moisturizer.

I used this every night for 14 days with no other actives to improve barrier function. After 14 days, I decided to try out that new exfoliating serum again to test my barrier. And it didn’t sting this time! This means this Pre-biotic barrier serum from Juicy Chemistry indeed helped strengthen my barrier.

My barrier had only weakened but if you have a damaged barrier, I recommend doing the 7-day course instead.

Overall, I am quite happy with how this serum turned out. Though the price is on the steeper side, I find it to be a worthy investment for your skin.
