5 Benefits Of Hibiscus Powder + How To Use It For Radiant Complexion

Last Updated on April 2, 2024

When we think of hibiscus, we usually imagine them as fragrant flowers adorning our garden. But do you know hibiscus has several benefits for our skin as well?

Well, there are several varieties of hibiscus but the king of all is Hibiscus sabdariffa. Also known as roselle or red sorrel, it is used primarily for its health and beauty benefits.

Roselle flowers look different from the regular garden variety of hibiscus. Unlike all other varieties, roselle is rich in anthocyanins which also gives this flower its deep, vibrant red colour.

Benefits Of Hibiscus Powder For Skin

1. Fights environmental damage

Hibiscus flowers, especially the roselle variety are rich in antioxidants like anthocyanins and Vitamin C which can neutralize free radicals that cause oxidative stress on the skin. This helps protect our skin from sun-induced fine lines, wrinkles, redness, and dark spots.

2. Has natural AHAs

Hibiscus can also help get rid of dead skin as it has exfoliating properties. It has naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acids(AHAs)that melt the bonds holding dead skin cells to the skin. This speeds up the cell turnover rate and reveals a smoother and brighter complexion.

But what makes hibiscus sabdariffa powder stand out from other AHA products in the market is its gentle nature that does the job without causing any burning sensation or irritation.

3. Supports collagen production

Hibiscus is often referred to as nature’s botox due to its anti-ageing properties that help combat fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging. It has many bioactive compounds like Vitamin C, AHAs, and antioxidants that support collagen synthesis.

It also slows down collagen and elastin breakdown which helps skin stay firm and elastic for longer.

4. Calms the skin

Like many botanical ingredients, hibiscus sabdariffa flowers possess anti-inflammatory benefits for the skin. When applied topically, hibiscus powder helps soothe skin irritated by acne, harsh skincare products, and more. It also has nutrients that may speed up healing by promoting cell renewal and protecting the skin from harmful UV rays.

5. Fight hyperpigmentation

All those AHAs, Vitamin C, and antioxidants found in hibiscus can also help you get more even-toned and radiant-looking skin. Daily use improves cell renewal and gets rid of dead, pigmented skin while preventing any future hyperpigmentation formed due to sun exposure.

How To Use Hibiscus For Its Skincare Benefits

The easiest way to utilize the benefits of hibiscus for skin is by incorporating hibiscus powder in all your DIY beauty recipes. The powder is made by drying and then crushing hibiscus flowers.

Now, any variety of hibiscus can be used to make hibiscus powder. But what you truly want is hibiscus sabdariffa powder since it has the highest amounts of anthocyanins in it.

3 Hibiscus Powder  Recipes You Must Try For Its Skin Benefits

I have been using the Blend It Raw Apothecary Hibiscus Powder (10% off code: DEMURE10) in various DIY recipes, from face masks and scrubs to even powder cleansers. I love how my skin feels refreshed, smoother and brighter every time I use it.

Here are 3 ways you can use hibiscus powder for skin care.

  1. Pure Hibiscus Powder Face mask

I think the best and easiest way to get the most out of hibiscus powder is to use it on its own as a face mask. Mix it with some water or hydrosol to make a smooth paste and apply it all over the skin.

After 15 minutes, rinse it with water and pat dry with a towel. My skin always feels smoother and brighter after using the powder this way so it is my favourite DIY with this ingredient.

  1. Exfoliating Hibiscus Powder Cleanser

Since hibiscus has natural AHAs and brightening benefits for skin, it can be a great addition to your daily powder cleanser. All you need is some plain oats from your kitchen, rose petal powder and hibiscus powder.

Mix 4 spoons of oats flour/grounded oats with 1 spoon of rose and hibiscus powder each. Activate it with some rose hydrosol to make a paste.

Leave the paste on your skin for 5-7 minutes before gently scrubbing it using circular motions. Rinse with water and pat the skin dry with a towel. You can use this recipe daily as a cleanser or 2-3 times a week as an exfoliant.

  1. Hibiscus Brightening Face Mask

If your skin is feeling dull and dehydrated, get it glowing again with this hydrating face mask.

Mix 1-2 tsp of hibiscus powder with aloe vera gel to form a smooth paste. Apply an even layer all over the face and neck and leave it on for 10-15 minutes.

You can even add a few drops of face oil for an extra boost of moisture if you have dry skin. Rinse with water and pat dry your skin with a soft towel. Aloe vera will replenish moisture in the skin while hibiscus will add some much-needed glow.
