6 Trustworthy Ingredients To Get Rid Of Hyperpigmentation
Last Updated on April 2, 2024
Clear, even-toned skin is the ultimate skin goal for many of us. But too much sun exposure or even a tiny pimple can leave behind a dark spot or brown patch that takes forever to fade away on its own. While hyperpigmentation or darkening of the skin is a harmless skin issue, it’s a small but significant obstacle on your path to achieving healthy, glowing skin.
But What Exactly Causes Hyperpigmentation?
In simple terms, hyperpigmentation is caused due to excess melanin that your body produces as a response to injury or sun damage.
Sometimes even genetic conditions, hormonal imbalance or medications can lead to the darkening of certain areas of the skin leading to visible contrast in skin tone.
Indian skin is more prone to developing brown pigmentation on the face and the common types of hyperpigmentation are:
- Sunspots:
Also known as age spots, sunspots are a sign of photo-ageing. Too much sun exposure can lead to the formation of small brown spots on your face, hands, and other areas exposed to the sun.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH):
If you have acne-prone skin, you may have dark brown spots left behind on the skin as the skin reacts to the injury caused by acne.
- Tan:
Spending several hours in sunlight can lead to overall darkening of your skin tone as the skin produces high amounts of melanin to protect itself from UV damage.
- Melasma:
This is a skin condition that leads to the formation of brown patches on areas that are exposed to the sun. But even pregnancy and hormones can cause melasma.
Which Ingredients Can Help Get Rid Of Hyperpigmentation?
Thankfully, you can reduce brown pigmentation on your face and body faster with help of certain skincare ingredients that inhibit melanin production.
So if you are looking to get a clear, even-toned complexion, here are some ingredients you must incorporate into your skincare routine.
1. Vitamin C
Vitamin C or L-ascorbic acid is one of the best skin-brightening ingredients to tackle hyperpigmentation. It is a powerful natural antioxidant that protects your skin from sun damage and lightens dark spots left behind by acne or sun exposure.
Kakadu plums are one of the richest natural sources of Vitamin C in the world. But even amla (Indian Gooseberry), papaya, kiwi, and strawberries can provide you with a good amount of Vitamin C.
2. Rosehip Oil
Made from seeds of rose bushes, cold-pressed rosehip oil is another great natural remedy to reduce pigmentation on your face and body. This oil has wonderful wound healing properties and can help deal with scarring and PIH due to the presence of Vitamins A and C in it.
3. Licorice
Licorice root or mulethi is a natural alternative to hydroquinone- a popular skin lightening ingredient. It contains glabridin which inhibits tyrosinase activity to reduce melanin production and thus helps fade dark spots and suntan.
Licorice is a natural skin brightening ingredient that also helps soothe irritated skin with its anti-inflammatory benefits.
4. Sandalwood
Sandalwood is extremely soothing and helps reduce blemishes to even out your skin tone. It has been part of Indian beauty rituals for centuries and is often used with saffron for skin brightening.
5. Saffron
Saffron is one of the oldest natural remedies to get rid of hyperpigmentation and achieve a glowing complexion. If you are trying to get rid of suntan or just need to boost your skin’s radiance, saffron is a reliable ingredient to trust.
6. AHAs
While gentle physical scrubs are a great choice for your exfoliation routine, don’t underestimate the skin brightening properties of AHAs i.e Alpha hydroxy acids. These acids occur naturally in various plants and can help reduce and get rid of hyperpigmentation by improving the rate at which your skin sheds dead skin.
My Experience With Juicy Chemistry Products That Target Pigmentation On Face
We can always trust Juicy Chemistry to get us the purest, potent and certified organic botanical ingredients available across the world.
Over the last two years, I have tried various skincare products from Juicy Chemistry that have the above ingredients. So if you are looking for good quality, scientifically formulated and efficacious products to get rid of hyperpigmentation caused by acne or sun exposure, here are some products from Juicy Chemistry that can help you out.
Kakadu Plum and Matcha Face Mask
This facemask works right from the first use. It instantly brightens up my skin every single time I use it and makes my skin appear more even-toned with regular use.
It has Kakadu plum, licorice and amla powder as key ingredients along with rose and hibiscus petal powders as well.
I always use this right before going out to get an instant glow on my face. And the 20-gram jar lasts a long time as only a tiny quantity is required for each use.

Cold-Pressed Rosehip Seed Oil
This was one of my earliest purchases from Juicy Chemistry. The oil absorbs quickly and is rich in linoleic acid which helps avoid oiliness.
I used it every night for more than 3 months and noticed an improvement in even some older brown spots I had due to PIH. You can apply 2-3 drops of this directly on damp skin or mix it with a little aloe gel for more hydration.
Saffron, Rose and Australian Sandalwood Face Scrub
The Kesar-Chandan hype is real and a must-try combination in my opinion if your skin is looking dull due to tan. This is the gentlest scrub I have used so far and does a beautiful job in evening out skin tone.
It has rice flour, sugar and rose powder as key ingredients that gently scrub away dead skin to leave my skin soft and glowing. And the floral aroma from geranium flower oil will give a luxurious touch to your exfoliating ritual.

Blood Orange And Rosehip Lip Balm
My lips have always been pigmented and tend to look dull. No lip balm can lighten it but this lip balm somehow managed to make my lips look pinker and evenly pigmented. I emptied 2 jars of it and used several lip balms after it too. But none come close to it in terms of brightening and softness.
If you have dry, chapped or pigmented lips, this is hands down the best lip balm in India.

Keep using these skin brightening ingredients, exfoliate your skin twice a week and wear broad-spectrum sunscreen every day to get rid of hyperpigmentation.
